The board
Lobes of the Cerebrum
- 100 — This lobe, located at the front of the brain, is associated with executive functions such as planning, decision-making, and voluntary motor control.
- 200 — The primary visual cortex is located within this lobe, found at the posterior end of the cerebrum.
- 300 — This lobe, situated superior to the temporal lobe and posterior to the frontal lobe, contains the primary somatosensory cortex and integrates sensory information.
- 400 — Wernicke's area, a critical region for language comprehension, is located in this lobe of the dominant cerebral hemisphere.
- 500 — The central sulcus, also known as the fissure of Rolando, serves as the anatomical boundary separating this lobe from the parietal lobe.
The Brainstem & Cerebellum
- 100 — This most inferior portion of the brainstem connects to the spinal cord and contains vital centers regulating heart rate and respiration.
- 200 — The cerebellum is connected to the brainstem via three pairs of these fiber bundles, which relay information between cerebellar regions and the rest of the brain.
- 300 — This region of the brainstem, located between the medulla and the midbrain, contains the pneumotaxic and apneustic centers that help regulate breathing rhythm.
- 400 — The cerebellum is divided into two hemispheres connected by this central, worm-like structure.
- 500 — The superior and inferior colliculi, which serve as relay centers for visual and auditory reflexes respectively, are located on the dorsal surface of this brainstem region.
Deep Brain Structures
- 100 — Often called the brain's relay station, this diencephalic structure routes incoming sensory information to the appropriate cortical areas.
- 200 — This almond-shaped structure within the temporal lobe plays a key role in processing emotions, particularly fear and aggression.
- 300 — The hypothalamus regulates homeostasis by controlling this gland, often called the master gland, via hormonal and neural connections.
- 400 — The basal ganglia include these three primary nuclei: the caudate nucleus, the putamen, and this structure formed by the globus pallidus and putamen together.
- 500 — The hippocampus, a structure critical for forming new declarative memories, is part of this broader anatomical system that also includes the cingulate gyrus and parahippocampal gyrus.
Protective Coverings & Ventricles
- 100 — The brain is surrounded by three protective membranes collectively called this.
- 200 — Cerebrospinal fluid is produced primarily by these specialized epithelial structures found within the brain's ventricles.
- 300 — This innermost meningeal layer closely adheres to the surface of the brain, following every gyrus and sulcus.
- 400 — The two lateral ventricles communicate with the third ventricle through this narrow opening, also called the foramen of Monro.
- 500 — Cerebrospinal fluid flows from the fourth ventricle into the subarachnoid space through these two lateral openings and one medial opening, collectively known as the foramina of Luschka and the foramen of Magendie.
Cerebral Cortex & Connectivity
- 100 — The cerebrum is divided into left and right hemispheres by this prominent longitudinal groove running along the superior midline.
- 200 — This massive band of white matter fibers connecting the left and right cerebral hemispheres is the largest commissure in the brain.
- 300 — The primary motor cortex, which directly controls voluntary movement of specific body parts, is located on this gyrus, immediately anterior to the central sulcus.
- 400 — Broca's area, responsible for speech production, is located in the inferior portion of this gyrus in the dominant frontal lobe.
- 500 — This deep lateral fissure of the cerebrum, also called the Sylvian fissure, separates the frontal and parietal lobes superiorly from the temporal lobe inferiorly.
